4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, June 26, 2008
I've now had this little guy for a year and with the exception of the green transducer dying in the first week (replaced immediately by Humminbird), it works like a charm. It's been in both frest and salt water repeatedly without a hiccup. I've had it in as much as 60 feet with fairly good resolution, discerning between weeds, rocks and fish
well for the price. Great little unit for the money, for sure-especially if you have a kayak like me. You won't be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars worked for a couple hours, August 10, 2010
brought this along for a vacation up north. I used it in part of the lake where I knew the depth and it certainly has a little error. However that was understandable. What was not understandable was it's non intuitive buttons and the fact that stopped working after one outing. The screen just went black and the item just stopped working. Changing the batteries didn't help. I requested a refund rather than an exchange.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless, not to mention that it arrived with dead battery to begin with., February 20, 2008
I got this product with great anticipation of having my fishing trip to be special. Indeed, it was "SPECIAL"!
The device arrived with dead battery to begin with. Second, after i replaced the battery and played with a little with settings, i started to doubt in terms on the possible performance. Nevertheless, when the big day have came and i departed to the place i want to fish(50 miles away) i was disappointed with the device. After casting few times and configure settings for sensitivity the signals started to be picked up by receiver antenna with a delay of 30, 60, 120 and more seconds. Eventually it died on me without even fully utilizing the futures of the device in about 15 minutes of my arrival. Before it did die though, I've noticed that it didn't read accurately the water depth. In short, it might have been the defective device or perhaps the set of dead batteries, but i refused to buy another one and will not recommend anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small screen but does the job, March 29, 2008
The 300C has a small screen compared to many others but it is bright and has high resolution and thousands of colors. The menus are quick and to the point and it has most of the features you will find in higher priced fishfinders. You do need to set it up properly for best results.. i.e. turn up gain, turn on whiteline, and turn OFF fish ID etc. Comes with a fixed mount bracket. I would have preferred the swivel bracket that comes with the FF140, but oh well. Seems to work well and no problems viewing screen even in bright sunlight. Its smaller size makes it an ideal color sounder for small boats with not a lot of room for electronics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, October 25, 2009
So far I have been very happy with this product.

I use this fish finder exclusively for kayak fishing in Gulf of Mexico, usually a couple hundred meters off the shore. As of writing this review, I have completely flipped the kayak and submerged this fish finder twice. In addition, I have completely drenched it on several occasions when moving through the surf while heading out. So far there are no issues. The rubber buttons seem adequately waterproofed, and the connector that hooks the power cable up is o-ring protected and has blocked water out very well.

This fish finder has a really bright display and shows up great even in direct sunlight. Although I was initially surprised by how small the screen was when I opened the package, I'm very happy with the quality now that I've used it on a couple of fishing trips. It clearly shows battery voltage, water temperature, and depth. The fish depth is clearly marked on the fish icons.

To use this fish finder on a kayak (Prowler Trident 15 Angler), I use a Replacement 12V-7AH. This fish finder will run easily all day on one charge with this battery. For charging I used the Schumacher SSC-1000A Automatic Speed Battery Charger set to normal/small battery settings. I used marine epoxy to mount the transducer to the bottom of a scupper hole. The fish finder by itself isn't tall enough to hold up the Trident's Sonar Shield, so I had to purchase a Anchor Lock W/ 241 Side Deck Mount and cut and file (sawzall and sander) it down so that it basically functions like a small extender for the fish finder mount. See user pictures for details.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin 300C Fishfinder, July 5, 2009
After much time researching fishfinders priced below 300 dollars, I decided this one was for me. Amazon had the best price going and this qualified for free shipping making this an easy choice.
The installation and set up was easy and this unit has performed as expected. I fish mostly fresh water lakes in PA and the Garmin 300C has been a great addition to my boat. I highly recommend this fish finder for those looking for a color unit with temp and great color. Amazon is the place to purchase as the delivery was prompt and product was as advertised.
Enjoy your time on the water.

Has all the needed features and is easy to navigate. Really happy I got this model. It's a good quality for not so much money :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied with portability and function, March 29, 2009
We resisted purchasing an electronic fishfinder, feeling that we needed to use our own senses and observations, but we've sure been saved by this Garmin 300C fishfinder on more than one occasion. The portability makes for easy setup and removal and setting this up is as easy as baiting a hook, but usually less messy. The screen is clear regardless of the weather and a little rain won't hurt it at all. We typically use this on Lake Anna in VA and don't regret the purchase at all! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome product, September 20, 2009
Bought this from amazon about a month ago and it works awesome. I use mine on a kayak so I need to use a portable model. The suction cup is awesome, don't worry about it falling off. I have to slide a knife under it to un-stick it from my boat.

The battery it comes with is like a small car battery, and initially turned me off to the product, this being the days of lithium-ion technology and all. I quickly warmed to it, however, as it recharges well and lasts forever. I went on a four hour fishing trip, left it uncharged, then took it out again for another four hours without coming close to losing power.

The dual beam was a big selling point for me when I bought it, but honestly it seldom spots any more fish (fish picked up by the second beam are displayed as white rather than black). I wouldn't let this feature keep you from buying a single beam product.

When I bought it, it sold for 111.00 from a company called Ritz Interactive, which no longer seems to be listed as a merchant. Take $30.00 off for applying for the amazon credit card, and I got it for 91.00. Plus got free shipping.

I don't really have any experience using other fish finders, but this product works great for me. If you're looking for a fishfinder with long battery life and accurate readouts for a low price, this is a great deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice compact unit, June 15, 2010
I had received this product with the intent of using it my kayak. But I'm finding that it is very handy in other situations. The suction cup holds extremely well, and is adjustable with numerous boat hull designs. The battery lasts for as long as I'm fishing, which is generally not more that six hours at a time. Everything packs neatly in the bag and is ready to use in minutes. This is the first portable unit that I have owned, and the first by Humminbird. I'm very satisfied with both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good unit- two faults, October 13, 2010
I use 3 portable Fishfinders, two Eagle models and the Humminbird 160PT.
Overall the Humminbird seems better as a unit. The two faults are that first the on/off button on the Humminbird is very light, meaning that it can get turned on
without you knowing by accident it if it is pressed by something. This means that you can end up on your fishing site only to find your battery has been drained.
The solution is to disconnect the battery line either from the two battery terminals itself or from back of the unit. Still because the power button is so sensitive that hummindird should put a flip-up cover on it.
Second, the carrying bah is well built and designed, except for the square area that
zips open for battery access at the back. The square is too small for the 12v gel battery so just putting the batery in and out from there is nearly impossible, much
less connect or disconnect the terminals. That back battery access flap needs to be
much much bigger, perhaps the whole rear should open up.Other than these two points the 160PT is an excellenmt unit for the price.

    5-0 out of 5 stars versatile !, October 9, 2010
I own a number of boats and each boat has its own fish finder. I now possess two portable fish finders and by far I think this the best of the two. I have had the unit on now for 125 hours on display with display lights on high so as to test the battery. Still going on strong so when you go out fishing at night or on a multiple day fishing trip, you don't have to worry about how long the battery might last. Replacement Batteries are about $35.00 and the size of Back up emergency lights type batteries you see in any commercial building. The unit did not tell me the speed of the boat but no matter how fast, it would maintain bottom contact and readout. The suction cup worked really well, although it did detach once on a 6 hour trip. It is not a big deal when it does detach but plan for it as you would not want the transducer wire to wrap around your prop and I keep the transducer wire short out of the boat for that reason. The unit has a wide base and small D rings to strap it down if need be. The unit in the bag has weight to it, because the battery is located inside the bag. I might have liked heavier zippers on the bag since they seem somewhat flimsy though so far the zippers are opening and closing as expected. All around a good fish-finder especially with the dual-beam which gives it that extra range.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have had this for two seasons and it still works perfectly., October 23, 2010
I fish year round, rain or shine. this unit has helped me locate fish when I wasn't familiar with a location. I even use this unit ice fishing regularly and it performs almost as well. Sometimes if it is really cold, below 20 degrees, the unit won't function correctly after being on the ice for 3 to 4 hours. However, as soon as you heat it up it does just fine.

I am very thankful for this unit because it gets the job done at a fair price.

    Thanks Hummingbird. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Humminbird ICE 55, February 22, 2009
I purchased a used Humminbird ICE 55 fish locator which did not have the soft carry bag. It was nice to find one on Amazon at a discount, plus I have $25 in points on my Amazon.com Visa card, so it is only $22.00. I will feel better about transporting my locator when I have the soft bag to protect it. Last weekend we portaged a woods to go to a remote lake with snowmobiles and the locator had a rough ride in the sled with the equipment.
