5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Plain Spoken Review on Testosterone Therapy, February 12, 2009
I think "Testosterone for Life" is the best book on this subject for laypeople seeking diagnosis and treatment. Clearly written and plain spoken, it's easy to overlook the fact that Dr. Morgenthaler is in fact a clinical professor involved in research as well as a practicing Urologist.

"Testosterone For Life" will give you succinct treatment advice and guidance that will help you get on the most optimal path of hormome therapy if you suffer from testosterone deficiency. If you only read one book on this subject - this is the one.

I've suffered from testosterone deficiency for four years, and have been through a variety of Physicians and treatments. Through trial and error, I was underdiagnosed and undertreated for the first two years of treatment. My current Physician's treatment plans and ongoing test assessments completely coincides with Dr. Morgenthaler recommendations. I feel pretty good now.

It took me two years to figure out how to understand my lab assessments, treatment plan options and how to discuss them with my Physician. You can figure it out in one day if you get this book!

What's important about this book for those seeking treatment, is the chapter on the measurement and assessment of testosterone levels. To summarize, many Physicians measure, diagnose and treat testosterone deficiency on the sole basis of one's "Total Testosterone" level. In practice, the measure of "Freely Available Testosterone" is also important in establishing an effective treatment plan and level of medication. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

The rest of the book is excellent as well. As mentioned by other reviewers, the chapters discussing hormone therapy and prostate cancer are thoughtful and present hormone therapy in a new light. Very interesting reading.

A past reference work for me was "The Testosterone Syndrome" by Eugene Shippen, MD. While still a fine book on this subject, it has not been updated in many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A better perspective on testosterone., November 30, 2008
Dr. Morgentaler will ease any fears you have about supplementing with testosterone under a doctor's care. He explodes the myth that testosterone causes prostate cancer and suggests that it might actually be low testosterone that causes prostate cancer. There are a few people who should not supplement with testosterone but then I'd have to recreate the entire book to tell you who they are. Rather than having me recreate the entire book I'd suggest you read it yourself. It's an easy read (not too technical for the layman)and very informative.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful - But omits key areas completely, January 22, 2010
Testosterone for Life is indeed useful as other reviewers have pointed out, but the author simply omits key areas such as testosterone - estrogen balance and how that effects testosterone treatment strategies. Shippen in his book, The Testosterone Solution, describes how a man's estrogen levels can effect his free testosterone levels and how some types of testosterone delivery systems can cause more conversion of testosterone to estrogen than others. More estrogen is not what you want.

If you check out Shippen's book or just do searches on the internet you will see how much discussion there is of the testosterone - estrogen balance and conversion issue. Does Morgentaler disagree with Shippen? Does he think estrogen does not matter? If so, why not say so and explain his position? That would be useful to me. As it is, there is a conversation in books, in articles, in blogs and in men's health forums indicating this is an important area to consider when deciding on testosterone strategies. The author simply ignores this conversation giving no input, acting as if it did not exist. This failure to discuss all the issues does not serve the reader well and it was a disappointment to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great Book, January 18, 2009
As a prostate cancer survivor, I have read more than my share of books, medical journals, research reports, etc. but this book was the most enlightening. The author did an excellent job explaining everything in terms that we laymen can understand. This is the most up to date information on what has been a very misunderstood, and much maligned treatment option that could benefit a lot of men.

It is indeed gratifying to find that there are still some physicians out there that have the courage to tell others that the "emperor has no clothes" so to speak. Especially when what he has to say is the opposite of what all too many urologists have been led to believe.

Many men have symptoms of low testosterone, but are seldom if ever properly diagnosed, much less treated for it. If you suspect you may be one of them, this book will tell you all you need to know about this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Morgentaler does it again!!!, December 11, 2008
I've read Dr, Morgentaler's previous two books (The Male Body and The Viagra Myth)and enjoyed them both. So I had pretty high standards for his third, Testosterone For Life. I was not disappointed. Dr. Morgentaler's writing style is clear and unpretentious and his mastery of the subject matter is awesome. The book was not too technical and was really easy to read. I would highly recommend this book to all men. It helps take the fear out of aging and replaces anxiety and confusion with facts and examples that readers will be able to relate to and act on. Great stuff, doc.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and user-friendly, January 25, 2009
As a physician specializing in bioidentical hormones for women and men, I'm grateful that "Testosterone for Life" is now in print. Dr. Morgentaler does an exceptional job at creating a book the average man can use to learn about the important functions testosterone performs, symptoms of deficiency, and options for supplementation. I've been educating patients, physicians, and pharmacists for years about bioidentical testosterone and this book will be a great "nuts and bolts" primer for the lay person and healthcare professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Men and Women Over 50, even over 40, January 24, 2009

Not just for men. Though low testosterone directly affects men more often than it affects women - and this book is directed primarily at men who suffer or who think they may suffer from low testosterone - the women in men's lives also benefit from reading this book.

Young men (men under 40, especially men 30 and under), rarely have problems with low testosterone.

However, by the time a man reaches 40, some men will have low total testosterone or low bioavailable testosterone.

Between 40 and 49, nearly 10 percent of men will have low total testosterone or low bioavailable testosterone.

Between age 50 and 59, nearly 30 percent of men low total testosterone or low bioavailable testosterone.

Between ages 60 to 69, that percentage increases to more than 40 percent.

The percentage increases even more over the age of 70.

Low testosterone (Low T) can lead to both physical and sexual effects. Low T can contribute to prostate difficulties, increased risk of prostate cancer, Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which is a risk factor for heart disease, heart attacks and stroke); the weakening of bone and muscle mass in men, increased adipose (fat) tissue in men.

Men who are significantly overweight and who have fatty 'male breasts' often suffer from a lack of testosterone, as the increased weight caused some of their testosterone to the hormone estradiol, which causes an increase in breast size.

Men with Low T often have less interest in sex, even if they love their partner, and find their partner attractive. The author cites one patient whom his friends said was lucky because he had such an attractive wife, yet this patient did not want to do anything sexual with her, or with anyone.

Men with Low T are also likely to have difficulty with getting or maintaining an erection, which treatment with Viagra does not seem to cure. Men with Low T are likely to have difficulty reaching orgasm, sometimes known in the medical profession as 'retarded ejaculation.'

In Boston, we would call that "retahded ejaculation."

This, of course, is a huge issue with men - and with the women or woman in a man's life.

Medical conditions or medications can also contribute to sexual difficulties, most notably overweight, diabetes or taking the anti-depressants that are SSRIs - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - which includes many common anti-depressants.

The upside of this is that diagnosis and treatment for Low T is easily available, and it can restore confidence, happiness, and health for a man's life, and their partner.

Males have testosterone from the time they are in the womb, as testosterone imprints itself upon the brain of a male fetus, which accounts for the failed experiments of the 1970s when parents would refuse to give guns to young boys, thinking that the absence of guns would make a boy less likely to behave wild or boyish. Parents were often amazed that boys would pick up sticks or branches and then use them as guns or swords.

Men over the age of 40 who think they might have Low T should talk with their physician, because diagnosis is easily confirmed with some simple blood tests. Treatment is not difficult, either.

Worst is when a person ruminates over possibilities but does not take action.

Of course, not every sexual or marital difficulty is due to Low T or ED. Relationship difficulties can contribute, but if a man has no sexual interest - or low sexual interest in his partner - and little or no sexual interest, generally, Low T could be the cause, according to Morgentaler.

Men who have been successfully treated for Low T reported back to Morgentaler that they could not believe how often they now thought of sex and how much improved their life was, and that the men's wives 'complained that they were chasing after them like a teenager.'

Morgentaler distinguishes between the 'desire for sex' and the 'hunger for sex,' noting that one patient said that he wished to have sex with his wife, whom he very much loved - but that he did not have 'this primal hunger for sex', and clenched his fist.

Early on, it was believed that low desire was primarily a neurological function, and doctors would sometimes pinch the penis to determine the level of sensation in the penis. Doctors often discovered, as Morgentaler did, that their patients jumped across the room, howling in pain.

    The chapters include:

    Chapter 1: Recognizing the Symptoms

Chapter 2: Testosterone and Your Health: Understanding Testosterone
Chapter 3: Could You Have Low Testosterone?

Chapter 4: What You Should Know About Being Evaluated for Low Testosterone

Chapter 5: Benefits of Testosterone Therapy

Chapter 6: Treatments for Low Testosterone Levels

Chapter 7: Testosterone and Prostate Cancer

Chapter 8: Risks, Side Effects, and Medical Monitoring

Chapter 9: Treating Men Who Have a History of Prostate Cancer

Chapter 10: The Future of Testosterone

    A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The new top choice book for "regular guys", February 4, 2009
Hands down, this is the new top choice as a practical guide for testosterone for "regular men," not those looking to get pumped up. "The Testosterone Syndrome" used to fill that bill and is still informative, but this is the new top of the pile, being current (10 years newer), comprehensive, and readable.

Having also read this Harvard doctor's scientific publications (no, I'm not a friend of the author), it's clear he knows what he's talking about and is up on the new data that refutes old myths. Covers the newest FDA-approved form, steady-release pellets, along with gels. The Q&A sections are particularly helpful and true to life.

For more comparison of testosterone books, see my "Listmania" guide "Men's hormones for healthy aging, not bodybuilding or vanity." But as of February 2009, this is an obvious first choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the love of life, July 9, 2009
Written by an expert in testosterone therapy, Testosterone for Life covers all aspects of testosterone & testosterone supplementation in a witty and accessible style. Drawing on 30 years' research, the author discusses the role of this hormone in the body, symptoms of its deficiency, safe supplementation and its benefits, plus the latest scientific breakthroughs. He uses anecdotes from his practice backed by established data and the latest research. The chapters conclude with case studies of men who have benefited by supplementation and a question & answer section. The book confirms Dr William Regelson's claims for testosterone in his groundbreaking book The Superhormone Promise but is more extensive and up to date.

The symptoms of deficiency include libidinal dysfunction in many men over 40 years, erectile dysfunction, loss of energy, lethargy, fatigue, low mood or clinical depression, muscle loss and fat gain. Low testosterone also increases the risk of osteoporosis and resultant fractures. Boosting testosterone levels may lead to improved overall health, increased vitality, sharper mental agility and an increase in lean muscle mass whilst reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Various ways of supplementation like the patch, gel, injection & pellet, possible side effects & medical monitoring are examined in detail.

Morgentaler's research revealed that the historical fear of higher testosterone levels increasing the risk of prostate cancer is baseless, lacking scientific support. In fact the latest research results indicate just the opposite; that prostate cancer risk may be greater among men with low levels of the hormone. In the last chapter, the author investigates preliminary evidence which suggests that testosterone supplementation may profoundly improve quality of life by means of a wide array of general health benefits. Testosterone for Life is an informative read and valuable reference guide. The text is enhanced by illustrations.

Of course testosterone is not the only natural hormone of which supplementation brings about improved health. The body's production of all of them declines with age. The benefits of DHEA, part of which is converted into testosterone in the body, are discussed by Stephen Cherniske and Ray Sahelian who has also written informative books on melatonin and pregnenolone. Ronald Klatz & Robert Goldman have long investigated anti-aging and age reversal techniques; testosterone is amongst the substances examined in their latest work The Official Anti-Aging Revolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Testosterone for Life: Recharge Your Vitality, Sex Drive, Muscle Mass, and Overall Health, July 4, 2009
This book opened my eyes to why men deteriorate so rapidly in old age. There is no reason why men can't live into old age with a much higher quality of life. I would recommend that all men read this, be tested and follow through with treatment. Free testosterone is the key to health in older men, those over the age of 50. At 62 I am an avid bodybuilder but have been frustrated trying to eliminate belly fat and build lean muscle mass even with heavy exercise and proper nutrition supplemented with high levels of protein. I had my blood tested for testosterone and found that my free testosterone is 11.5 which is under the author's recommended level of 15 and others recommendation of 20-25 which is that level of a man in his twenties. You will get resistance from traditional doctors to treat this. Find a urologist that understands this problem and will treat it. I even had questions and emailed the author of the book on a Sunday afternoon. He responded within hours. This book is a MUST READ for all aging men who have the symptoms explained in the book and from what I have seen, most men 50 and over exhibit the physical symptoms and, no doubt, have the sexual symptoms, as well. The important thing to remember is that, although testosterone is an anabolic steriod, the purpose of the treatment is to bring men back to the levels of their youth. I call this "leveling the playing field". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent series--get them all!, January 10, 2006
I would highly recommend any of the books in this series by Cheri Meiners. This book has been especially helpful as my 5-year-old sometimes encounters children who *don't* share well or want to take turns. These books caught my eye because the writing level is just right for pre-K and kindergarten children. Truthful without being preachy or overly wordy, the series shows children and family members from many different ethnic groups in the colorful illustrations, and each book addresses issues which are developmentally critical to this particular age group: sharing, taking turns, being afraid, listening, respecting others, helping out at home, etc. These books have given us a starting point to discuss problems at school or interacting with others, and have helped my son to have more empathy for his peers....I am hopeful that this quality will serve him well as he continues on to kindergarten and elementary school. It is exciting to hear him use ideas from this series to problem solve.

I often refer to this book when we are confronted with situations about sharing and taking turns. It has been great tool in teaching the importance of sharing with my son. I highly recommend it.

In this compelling book, the authors present an innovative therapeutic model for understanding and treating adults from emotionally abusive or neglectful families?families the authors call narcissistic.Narcissistic families have a parental system that is, for whatever reason (job stress, alcoholism, drug abuse, mental illness, physical disability, lack of parenting skills, self-centered immaturity), primarily involved in getting its own needs met.The children in such narcissistic family systems try to earn love, attention and approval by satisfying their parents' needs, thus never developing the ability to recognize their own needs or create strategies for getting them met.By outlining the theoretical framework of their model and using dozens of illustrative clinical examples, the authors clearly illuminate specific practice guidelines for treating these individuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!, March 22, 2005
Book is colorful, keeps childrens attention, I would advise it best for a 3-5 yr old, depending on maturity of the child. (Basically if they can be still and listen) it has nice big words so a beginning reader could try to read some by themself. I love good books that teach manners! We got this book from the library, but I would love the hardback version of this book as well as most of them in this series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach your child how to pay attention BEFORE even starting school!, August 18, 2006
I think this one is our favorite. The little boy looks so intently at his teacher. He learns how to pay attention even when there are distractions. These books are cleverly written and I just love the illustrations. Nice representation of all ethnic groups.

All the books in the 'Learning to Get Along' series are fantastic. They teach vital social skills (paying attention, sharing, respecting others property, etc) to children in a way that they can understand.

You can't go wrong with any of these books!

In the back there are great ideas on how to pose questions to your child. My son does poorly with abstract questions but with this book, he not only learns but the visual (which is fantastic) helps him respond better. I will be buying all the books in this series! It is so well worth it to teach your child important words...he now speaks about being polite, kind, showing respect, helping, sharing etc....LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have worked in the health promotion and aging field for over 35 years and have seldom seen this much information in one place on any topic. It is well organized, easy to understand, and honest about the realities of the difficulties of aging in our culture. I cannot think of any major question faced by those involved in this part of the life cycle that is not included in the book. The inclusion of many checklists, and other resource lists will simply the process of decision making every step of the way. My advice to those with questions about Eldercare is to buy this book, use it, and share it with those in your immediate family. You will be in a better position to handle the complex situations that emerge as you navigate this part of your family life cycle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming Help in a crisis time of need, November 6, 2009
A note from the author... I hope you find this review helpful...

Recently I found myself along with 3 other siblings and spouses thrust into new uncharted waters in a totally new season of our lives. Suddenly and without any training we were and continue to this day having to take care of my aging parents. I for one will freely admit that as a child I was never trained, prepared, nor exceptionally gifted to undertake such a task. It is just not the type of thing that you can ever really get to a line and say ready...set...go...and do it very well. Elderly health care in 2005 does not always afford us the luxury of any long preparation either emotionally or financially.

Suddenly unmercifully and usually without warning you hear over the phone in the midst of a busy American routine those words you dread. It's Cancer, a stroke, or replacement surgery, just minor or major operations which means weeks of homecare and hospitalization's, etc., You are suddenly no longer swinging a few bats warming up in the on deck circle there in safety at a bit of distance. But you find yourself thrust into the batters box. You are no longer the stand by just in case fill in player who dressed for the game just in case you would or might be needed. But suddenly with a phone call, you find yourself thrust without any prior warning into the batters box. You are to take charge with 3 others voices and votes, your parents primary healthcare.

Now, if you call a frantic call for "HELP" in the middle of the night when just the week before things were okay a warning, well then, you're doing better than we were. You find yourself suddenly up at the plate with bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the ninth your teams behind 3 runs. To top it off you're facing a 94mph fastball pitcher who also throws a mean slider called the reality of life. You have never been good at hitting these kinds of pitches. Much less being the homerun hitter the team needs at this moment and are all looking to you now for. Then you hear through your wife there is a book available on just such a thing. It allows you to calmly and logically check out all of your options. It tells you in simple language just how you go about walking through this difficult mine field you've been thrust into without training or any real prior warning. It tells you how to do this without losing your mind, your family unity, and most of all your parents dignity.

I found myself literally reading the pages of Joy's, "Elder Care" wonderful "How TO" book on the plane going headed to Florida. I was then going there for my Dad's 80th B-day party as well as a visit to help out for 10 days at my elderly parents. Little did I know then, that I would see those 10 days turn suddenly into 46 long and hectic days I ended up spending there. Little did I realize as I paged through this how to book on Elderly Care that it would be like a daily Bible to me. I was literally reading a chapter ahead of the events as they unfolded in the next days. It was giving me the answers to question I had not yet asked, but found myself doing so in the next days to follow.

As a former Eagle Scout, USMC SGT., Police Officer, Business owner, 20 years as a Lay Minister and being Happily Married to the same woman for over 26 years now, I'd received lots and lots of great training. Even you will have to admit that this background covers a lot of diversified and really good training. But nothing, absolutely nothing, but my Faith prepared me emotionally, physically, or all of us financially for the events that would suddenly and totally unwelcomed show up in the middle of the night. They just seem to attack you without ceasing on these issues when it's "Your Mom or Dad."

Thank you Joy, for the time it must have taken you and the wealth of information this book contains. I personally know that it was truly a Godsend at a time of crisis in our lives. It still today continues to guide us along these slippery slopes. But because of this well timed work of Mercy and Grace, we have maintained as a family, and continued to allow my parents their Dignity and somewhat their independence. I believe this book will help answer the question of the heart on elderly care and give you practical and timely information to steer you to through the minefields of elderly care life. You should have a copy on the shelf in your own homes and be reading it now, if your parents are near or reaching retirement age.

We waited and it caught us totally by surprise. But it didn't catch Joy by surprise...I personally believe that she was obedient to the Spirit of God to produce this work for a time such as this. Our generation will Thank Her one day I believe for her unselfish actions in writing this Elder Care "How To Bible" for the uniformed. The Word of God says that "...my people perish for a lack of knowledge..." I believe that this book is full of knowledge that will help us all in our moments of crisis and bring life and health to all who read it.

Thanks for listening to my lengthy review and a very special Thanks to You Joy. You just keep on writing Joy and we will keep getting filled with the great knowledge we all need and can practically use for our loved ones. God Bless you and again... Thank you from our families hearts to yours.

    God Bless You,
    David D. Spaulding

Joy Loverde's guide was like having a personal advocate walking along side me and my family as we cared for aging parents. Not only was every issue addressed in a practical manner, it was obcvious that Ms. Loverede cares deepley for elders and those assisting them. I recommend this as a must read to everyone. I know they will find answers to their questions and be blessed along the way.

This could have been featured in our 'Health' section, but is reviewed here for its wider applicability to any library concerned with social services, social issues, and eldercare. "The Complete Eldercare Planner" has been revised and completely updated for 2009 and offers the latest information on work, family, and creating a long-term, affordable care plan for an elderly loved one. From how to talk over issues to assessing senior housing options and managing medication, "The Complete Eldercare Planner" should be in every public library's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Valuable Resource, July 28, 2009
This book continues to be the first place I refer people who ask me what to do for their aging parents. Having been in the senior living industry for nearly 25 years, I know what people need to look for. But I still encourage the many people who ask my advice to start with Joy's book! The last person I directed to the book told me that she had no idea just how helpful the information would be before she read it and that she agreed that it was a "must read" before even starting to look for senior living options for her parents.

The Complete Eldercare Planner is a must read for anyone that has aging parents, family members or friends and I recommend it highly! ... Read more

    Sugar Is Not Love

Do you have a smart, creative, loving child who is also cranky, inattentive, and sometimes downright obnoxious? If you’ve written off this negative behavior as “typical” for your child’s age—whether toddler or teen—stop and think: Does your child have a taste for soda, sugary breakfast cereals, and treats like candy and cookies? Does she eat regularly scheduled meals or skip them? What, exactly, does he drink and snack on throughout the day?

Your child’s behavior may be linked to diet—specifically to the sugar in obvious sources like sweets and soda and to hidden sugars that lurk in many foods, fruit-based drinks, and “healthy” snacks like granola bars. And if your son or daughter is sugar sensitive, misbehavior and moodiness can be aggravated by missed or late meals and junk foods.

Now, bestselling author Kathleen DesMaisons offers you a workable solution for getting back your child by changing his diet—without creating a sense of deprivation, without setting unrealistic goals, and without turning sugar into “forbidden fruit.” This book offers:

•A step-by-step program, backed by years of research, for gradually improving the food your child eats—you and your whole family will benefit!
•Tips for navigating the sugar-laden world of birthday parties, holidays, and school cafeterias
•Ways to incorporate healthy snacking and regular mealtimes into your child’sday, including suggestions for meals and snacks, plus recipes

Little Sugar Addicts isn’t about strange foods, dramatic lifestyle changes, or complicated menus—just support, guidance, and real-life suggestions from other parents that work. It will help you make the connection between the addictive qualities of sugar and negative behavior and offer a healthy solution you and your whole family can live with.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will answer so many questions parent have!, November 4, 2004
Kathleen DesMaisons first book, Potatoes Not Prozac, changed my life. I went from a completely depressed person well on my way to taking anti-depressants, to a happy, confident person who loves life--all because I changed the way I ate! Since healing my own body and mind I have changed my children's diets with miraculous results.

Before Kathleen's program my kids would whine, scream, hit, be totally out of control, throw tantrums and in general, I didn't like them very much a lot of the time. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong?!? How could I feel this way about my kids and what could I do about it? No amount of parenting advice or classes could change what was going on with them. Well, after getting myself steady on Kathleen's program I started to look at my kids diet. It took a little time and adjustment, but now by feeding them differently and at consistant times they are mostly fun, loving, compassionate, focused, easy to talk to and the joys I always knew they were. Food was the answer, pure and simple!

Get this book if you've ever had those feelings of helplessness with your kids. It will change your life and your families life!

5-0 out of 5 stars The program in this book can lighten up the whole household!, July 28, 2004
This book is an excellent collection and celebration of years of experience helping families clean up their food and being delighted by the rewards: a cheerful, funny, smart, affectionate and connected family.

I am the 'Connie' quoted in the book who says you get your easy kids back. I've been 'doing the food' myself for about 3 years and as the mom, I cook and shop per this program. I have a 17 yo daughter still at home (3d of 3) who has come along this food journey with mom; as a teen she still chooses sugary junk food sometimes, but by gum she is completely knowledgable about its effects!

DD much prefers her cheerful, calm mom. She remembers the old days of moodiness, gloom, cranky. Our house is a place of affection, laughs, and consideration where before it was too often drama, crisis, silence and slammed doors. (Turns out that mom's 'pizza coma' kind of scared her but she never said so at the time!)

It's quite unbelievable until you experience it, how big an effect regular, sugar-and-whites free meals can have. Little by little, step by step, recipe by recipe we have moved to fresh whole foods and family meals.

The reviewer of the book sounds kinda spooked herself at changes like this, LOL. But EVERY change we have made, we made because we like the new way BETTER and feel better. None of this grim stuff for us. Really, it is fun and funny to see what we are ready to change and what we aren't, sometimes.

And I say, never, never, never underestimate what kids will 'get.' My DD has not read one word of any of DesMaisons' books, and thinks the full 'no whites' deal is just for middle-aged me who obviously screwed up earlier (I am dealing with overweight)... but even so, here is what she has spontaneously shared with me:

    - she thinks her clear skin and luscious figure is from good food available at home
    - she always has breakfast and lunch; no starve/binge
    - she notices her high school friends - no breakfast, no lunch, and then kaboom, regrettable choices
    - she knows about low serotonin and its relation to diet (they studied it in health!)
    - she knows about beta-endorphin and its role in craving / addiction
    - she knows it is inherited and biochemical
    - one time reading a book for English class about an addicted teen, she said, Mom, she was sugar sensitive before she ever started 'using'
    - she knows buying junk is out of her own allowance

You can totally arm your kids with understanding & information. they will LIKE it and their feeling of control!

How I wish I had this when my kids were little!

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books ever for families, October 13, 2004
My experience is much like the previous reviewer's, only I was a bit older when I found Dr. DesMaison's
work, and started following her food program. Her books explained my whole life....depression, mood
swings, meltdowns, temper tantrums, low self-esteem etc. "Doing the food" changed all of this. I've just
finished reading "Little Sugar Addicts", and I think how wonderful that families today have this
available to them, and what a difference it would have made in my family's lives. What is so different
about this is it is not the parent/s *telling* the children what to do, but inviting the whole family to
participate in what and how changes will be made. Lots of quotes from real people that are doing this plan.
It works. I recommend this book to all parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, friends with children.
What a difference it will make.

5-0 out of 5 stars If only my mother had had this book when I was a child, October 13, 2004
If my mother had had this book when I was a child, my whole life would have been different. Doing the food program would have spared both of us a lot of pain. I didn't find out until I was nearly 40 and Dr. DesMaisons wrote her first book that it was the food I was eating that had made me so depressed for most of my life. Doing her food program changed my life.

I don't have children of my own, but reading this book makes me almost wish I did. DesMaisons explains that limiting sugar in your house isn't enough - the process she outlines will help your children see the effect that sugar has on them, and buy into the whole process of eating healthy food and avoiding sugar.

One of the most interesting pieces of information, in my opinion, is that the majority of tantrums are caused by blood sugar crashes. Once a child is in biochemical meltdown, punishment doesn't work, but a cheese stick will. And by making sure your child eats some protein every three hours, you can prevent meltdowns.

I grew up feeling bad because I was a very difficult child. Reading this book gave me compassion for myself as a child. I wasn't difficult on purpose - I had a biochemical imbalance. With the right food, things would have been very different.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read whether you have kids or not!!!, August 5, 2004
Dr. Kathleen DesMaisons has outdone herself this time. Her latest book, Little Sugar Addicts, offers compassionate, funny, and practical guidance for parents and caregivers to help children become their best and brightest selves by healing their biochemistry through nutrition. It turns out that the meltdowns, tantrums, and general behavior issues many children have are due to what they have been eating, and when they have been eating it. DesMaisons describes with great understanding and authority how to enlist kids in the process of figuring out how they can change the way they eat so they will feel better. The book also includes many kid-friendly recipes and realistic suggestions to get started.

On the more personal side, I found as I read Little Sugar Addicts I was able to start reassembling many pieces of my own childhood in a different way. There were incidents and events that hadn't made sense, until I put them together with the explanation of biochemistry. When seen in the context of biochemical imbalance, some of my memories suddenly fell into a place of healing.

Even if you don't have children, or you no longer have children at home, or you don't work with children, you will love reading this book. If you do have children in your life in any context, then this book is a must read!!!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!, July 27, 2004
This is a must read for every parent, whether you think your child is a sugar addict or not. We have all experienced children having melt downs, tantrums, mood swings, low self-esteem. Often we've been at a loss how to address these, have read tons and tons of self-help books or sought counselors for behavior modification techniques in an attempt to find a solution. Rarely did we find the help that produced long-lasting results.

Dr. DesMaisons' program takes a different approach, based on her understanding that behavior is often linked to diet, and particularly sugar sensitivity. Just by changing what and when we eat, we change how we think and feel. Amazing results in family dynamics have occurred where her program has been implemented.

This book gives step by step guidelines and examples of how it works and how to work it. Compassionate, deeply experiential and humorous as well, it will become a classic in helping us help our children to express their smart, creative, loving selves!

Kudos for groundbreaking information and a true gift to us all!

    Gretel

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has changed our family!, August 4, 2004
I have three boys. Twins ages 6 and a 3 year old. They are all sugar sensitive, some worse than others. Doing this program has made an enormous change in our household. My children are happy, calm, funny, energetic and NOT whiny. Before doing this program, they were only sometimes happy, calm, funny, and energetic but they were also whiny, violent, overly sensitive and tearful. They had numerous meltdowns, in fact, there was probably a day that didn't go by without a meltdown from somebody. Today, meltdowns are a very rare occurrence and usually happen as a direct result of my kids ingesting some sugar.

If you have children that you feel are out of control, super sensitive, whiny, violent, having trouble concentrating, etc. Try this program, one tiny step at a time, and you too will see the miracles unfold!

5-0 out of 5 stars If only I had this 30 years ago!, August 1, 2004
This wonderful book is filled with information I wish I had had when I was raising my children 30 years ago. It would have understood the wild mood swings and instant tears that so drove us crazy. It wasn't the fault of our parenting skills, it wasn't a flaw in our childrens' personalities, it was just that we have sugar sensitive children and a sugar sensitive mom.

I am thrilled to have this knowledge now, though, so that it can help my grandchildren. Just keeping those little bodies fed with the right foods can make all the difference.

When I look at the news of all the children who are overweight, being diagnossed with ADD or ADHD and being put on drugs, I am hopeful that their parents will read this book and find a simple way to reverse these problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for anyone who works with or has kids!, October 5, 2004
This program is not only extremely helpful, it is really easily do able. Most parents will look at the title and think there is no way they are going to stop giving their kids sugar completely - the kids will riot right? Christmas without candy? Halloween??? You will be so pleasantly surprised if you read this book. First of all - going off sugars is the very last of several very detailed and important steps - there are a lot of us who are not to that point yet - and it is so very important that you slowly work your way toward it. Dr Kathleen gives you all the right steps so that you will not even miss it - REALLY! She helps with everything - including the holidays - including preventing eating disorders (so many of you will think that if you cut it out of your kids diets they will go overboard when you are not around - you have to read this book!!)

I truly believe everyone can benefit from Dr. Kathleen's program - sugar sensitive or not. Move over Atkins and South Beach and make way for Dr. Kathleen - hers is not a gimmick or even a diet - it is a HEALTHY WAY OF LIFE - THE RADIANT WAY!!!!

    5-0 out of 5 stars A different perspective, October 6, 2004
Even though I don't have kids yet, I bought and read Little Sugar Addicts. I'm sugar sensitive myself and through Dr. DesMaisons book Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program I was able to heal myself. After healing myself, I came to realize that my husband is also sugar sensitive and would greatly benefit from this program. Little Sugar Addicts gave me the tools I needed to help get him to change how he eats, so that his biochemistry can also be healed.

Since sugar sensitivity is biochemical, I'm sure our kids will be sugar sensitive also. Little Sugar Addicts gives us the knowledge we need to raise a child - and make that child's growing up years easier than ours were.

A unique guide, like none other on the market-packed with medical information, practical tips, psychological insight, and coping strategies-to help men help the women they love through this trying time.

When Marc Silver became a breast cancer husband three years ago, he learned firsthand how frightened and helpless the breast cancer husband feels. He searched in vain for a book that would give him the information and advice he so desperately sought. Now this award-winning journalist has compiled just the kind of emotionally supportive and useful resource that he wished he had been able to consult-to give men the tools they need to help their wives, their families, and themselves through this scary, uncertain time.

In his years as a consumer journalist and veteran of the News You Can Use staff at U.S. News & World Report, Marc Silver learned what kind of information and advice on medical crises readers found most valuable. He draws on that experience as he covers in depth all the issues couples coping with breast cancer will have to face during diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. Highlights include:
    - The shared experiences of other breast cancer husbands
    - Guidance from top cancer doctors in the country
    - Advice on when, how, and what to tell your young children
    - Tips on coping with radiation and chemotherapy
    - A candid discussion of sex and intimacy following breast cancer surgery

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential!, September 30, 2004
If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you are a new (and doubtless unwilling) member of the not-so-elite group of men who have become Breast Cancer Husbands. If so, stop reading this and buy this book. (Full disclosure: I was contacted by Marc Silver, the author, last year and interviewed extensively about my own experiences; I am quoted several times in the book.) I only wish that this book existed two years ago when my wife of 23 years was disgnosed with breast cancer; it is an invaluable resource that informs men in an accurate, succinct fashion exactly what is likely to happen at each stage of the diagnosis and treatment process. But Mr. Silver's arroach to the topic is hardly clinical. He deals with some of the most heart-wrenching topics any man will ever have to face with an eye on reality and a deft touch of humor. Breast cancer and humor in the same sentence? You've got to be kidding, right? Well, he pulls it off, managing to inject a lighter touch without ever minimizing the seriousness of his topic. Personally, I think most people use humor anyway to deal with the toughest situations, and the big "C" was no exception for my wife and I. Whether you are starting this journey, or if you've been through it like Marc and I have, this book is bound to become your most valuable resource, because it is told from the mouths of real Breast Cancer Husbands with real, true-life stories. With literally hundreds of books available for women who are dealing with this horrible disease, a book like this directed at the men simply did not exist. It was long overdue.

    4-0 out of 5 stars There's a reason it's popular, December 30, 2004
I'll chime in from the daughter's point of view: I got this book for my stepfather after reading the reviews, and it did not disappoint. It speaks directly to men and concerns they might not want to talk about (no beating around the bush) but the tone isn't annoying or Neanderthal. After reading it one thinks much of it is common sense-- but sometimes one needs to be reminded of what's common sense! (And maybe what seems like common sense to a 30-something woman may not be the first thing that comes to mind for the average 50 to 80-year-old guy under stress.) Anyway, my stepfather finished it in three days, so that's a good sign. It opened my eyes to some things too.

One tip: Cure rates are very high for early-stage breast cancer these days. Guys, skip the later chapters about "dealing with loss" unless you get to that point. Most women will recover, so no need to freak oneself out at the beginning. As we say in my family, "We'll fall off that bridge when we come to it."

Also recommended for women or for very involved family members: "Just Get Me Through This" (lots of helpful tips) and the two books by John Link (lots of technical info).

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping my husband IS helping me too!, December 23, 2004
This book is wonderful! I bought it for my husband after we recently learned that I have breast cancer for a second time and we are both reading it. It is packed with information but somehow reads like a good novel. I already can tell my husband is being more sensitive to my needs because of Marc's advice. So many things Marc Silver has written that I am so glad my husband will be reading. They are things I want him to know!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman diagnosed should give this book to her husband., October 27, 2004
Not only informative but even if your husband never reads it, it will open you up to ask for what you need during this stressful time. I wish I had this book at the beginning of my journey through breast cancer.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have, must-read book for breast cancer husbands, August 29, 2005
My only regret about this book is that I didn't get it sooner. I found this book while my wife was already half-way through treatment, at a breast cancer symposium. (As an aside, very few husbands attended the symposium other than me, a real shame; I felt deep anguish for the many women clearly going through treatment who were there alone and unsupported.) My wife is young, and her diagnosis really hit us from nowhere. I'm someone who is an eternal optimist, and the succession of worsening news about her condition nearly brought me to my knees. When I found this book I believe I was quietly depressed. It was so important to me not to "steal the spotlight" of attention from my wife that I intentionally avoided dealing with my own fears, trauma, and anger. I started reading the book on a long plane ride back home from a business trip, and as I read it I literally felt weight lifted off my shoulders. I cried, and I laughed, and mostly I felt tremendous relief. I have had the opportunity to meet the author at a speaking engagement, and I spoke up and told him that at a moment in my life where I felt all alone and very scared, he was my best friend. If you are a breast cancer husband, you simply must read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must read", August 25, 2005
As a health professional and prostate cancer survivor, I felt I could handle all aspects of cancer, but when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was devastated. I discovered that when a loved one is diagnosed, it's different! Within days of our news, our daughter-in-law sent me Marc Silver's book. I read every word in a very short time, and the difference in my attitude and acceptance of her cancer was dramatic.
Marc explains every aspect from diagnosis through treatment, and suggests many different ways to deal with each situation. He accomplishes this with both seriousness and a touch of humor.
This book was the most helpful resource I had as we traveled through this ordeal. In short, this is a "must read" for men dealing with their wives' breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Husbands, August 16, 2005
Despite its title, "Breast Cancer Husband" is really a book that I'd highly recommend not only to husbands but to siblings, children, parents, friends--in short, to anyone who cares about a woman with breast cancer--as well to the woman herself. The book has much to recommend it: thorough research, jargon-free prose, experts' opinions, survivors' stories, common-sense advice, humaneness and sensitivity, and (this came as a surprise) moments of true hilarity. After you've read it and absorbed its lessons (sample: Shut up and listen), you may be tempted to say, "I knew that!" Guess what? You didn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors, but not everyone survives., September 3, 2006
Silver's book is a helpful journalistic guidebook for spouses and partners of breast cancer victims; Part I is made up of 8 chapters and Part 2, 13 chapters. In the forward, Dr. Frederick P. Smith writes, "the support of a spouse can make a significant difference to the patient."

There is one chapter for those of us whose partners didn't make it: "Facing Death", but since I cannot bring back my wife I do "breast cancer work."

I use breast cancer stamps on my letters. I support breast cancer fundraisers. I advise my women friends to do self-exams and get mammograms. I mention to my students that they need to pay attention to their health. I make the point that early detection is crucial.

What does any of this accomplish? It's hard to tell.

I cannot go back to that initial incorrect diagnosis and tell the doctor "That might be cancer. We need detailed tests right away." At the time I should have been more suspicious, but we seemed young and healthy with two young sons.

Reading Silver's book will not prevent what happened to my family, but it certainly contains some useful advice for the spouses of survivors.

Great book. Very helpful for this husband of a breast cancer patient. I agree with the other reviewer in that you might want to skip the sections on metastasis and recurrence unless you really need to read them. I think so highly of this book that I donated two copies to a local cancer center's library. God Bless you all in your time of difficulty.

First, a disclaimer. The author and I know each other. Both of our wives were diagnosed with breast cancer in about the same time frame. We were intereviewed for the book. By the time the book came out, my wife had "finsihed" her course of treatment so much of what is in the book I had to learn on my own.

The day after we got the diagnosis, I found myself standing in front of the "disease" section at one of the local book store chains. I didn't know exactly what I was looking for at first. My original purchase of about a half dozen books were either very focused on the medical aspects of the disease or on women's experiences as survivors. While one or two of these books had parts of chapters for husbands, partners or significant others, none gave much information on what to expect and how to help. Ultimately, I sought out a therapist who specialized in helping those who deal with medical crises.

That helped a great deal, but Marc's book offers so much more. He is recounts the experiences of couples from almost every part of society, shares insights from medical experts and relates his own personal experiences. While no substitute for working with a qualified and caring therapist, his book is one of the only resources out there for husbands. Had it been available three years ago, I suspect I could have avoided some of the mistakes I made along the way.

While it is true that the learning curve is pretty steep, the first few weeks are crucial. No husband should leave the first appointment with the surgeon or oncologist without a copy of this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Teach Your Children, March 24, 2005
This is a book with a message that cannot be stressed enough. One major message that cannot be overemphasized is that abusers are NOT always strangers. Very young children are provided with tools of empowerment in this book and I like the direct way this serious topic of improper touching is addressed. While the illustrations are somewhat bland and lacking in color, that still does not detract from the book's main message.

I like the examples of unwelcome nonsexual touches such as enduring hugs and kisses from somebody the child either dislikes or does not know; unpleasant variations on "acceptable" touches, such as a hug that is too firm. Good or acceptable touch is explored, such as holding someone's hand and kissing someone you like/love. A good point about doctor examinations is given - although check ups are never pleasant, it is important to discuss with children why the doctor needs to examine every part of their bodies to ensure good health with no intention to hurt. That is a special case, but it still needs to be openly discussed.

Many children love to test out their new-found powers and in reading this to a group of young children and telling them to practice declaring refusal is very effective. It is also very empowering. Being loud with an abuser will undoubtedly get them to back off as predators do not want to attract attention to themselves.

The drawback is that it can be somewhat awkward to explain to a relative or other trusted adult such as a neighbor why your child refuses a hug and expresses dislike for it, but honoring the child's wishes is paramount. For example, there are numerous cases where children with autism find hugs too overwhelming because of sensory stimuli. The onslaught of sensory stimuli can be the feel of the hugger's clothing; cologne/perfume smells; feeling constricted and scratchy beards can make hugs far from pleasant or welcome. Many nonverbal autistic children who flee hugs can have this behavior explained in this manner. I knew one child who ran from a relative because the relative was loud and booming and known to swoop down on children with raucous displays of affection. The child found the noisy display frightening and annoying. From that child's perspective, the hugger's behavior looked like an attack. Although hugs have gotten good press over time, scant attention has been given to "unpleasant" hugs and the rights of people who don't want them. Then again there is the child's personality. There are people who are not overly fond of hugs and find them restrictive, and intrusive.

The words of David Crosby from 1969, "teach your children... give them a code which you can live by..." is a good summary of this book.

This is indeed an excellent book to help people protect their children from possible abuse, sexual or otherwise. It is non-threatening and having the child/children participate by adding their voices to the work make it all the more effective.

In addition to this book, I highly recommend Linda W. Girard's "My Body is Private;" Sandy Kleven's "The Right Touch: A Read Aloud to Help Prevent Child Sexual Abuse" and Cornelia Spelman's "Your Body Belongs to You" and Peter Alsop's excellent collection of songs entitled "Songs on Sex & Sexuality," most particularly the song entitled "My Body." These are all family geared and outstanding teaching tools that will certainly go far in creating a safer environment.

    3-0 out of 5 stars It's My Body review, January 26, 2000
This book is a good effort & very simply based. However, the illustrations are very plain & non-colorful. It was not very sucessful in keeping my child's interest & attention. It is not specific about good/bad-touch examples, but more about how one might feel about them. Unfortunately, I think a child's feelings are often quite confused in regards to this issue, especially when programmed in a continual incestual relationship. So, the message in this book might not be understood by a young child. It could be a helpful book in some cases, but I'm looking for something more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very needed..., October 31, 2003
There are many plusses to this book. That it was even written and is available is a HUGE plus. It is a message that children need to hear...over and over and over...That it is their body. That they have the right to feel *good* or *not good* about what someone is doing to it...and that they can say that, LOUDLY.

I do wish it was more visually *interesting* as it really is geared to younger childen. It could use more color to keep up the interest. Unfortunately, I tended to lose my son's interest when I was reading this... When he was young a *message book* wasn't strong enough reason to sit still, he visually needed the pictures. That said, I still did read this when from time to time. I would just pick up where I *lost* him the previous time.

The importance of this message can't be underscored enough and I don't think that the lack of visual *punch* is enough of a reason to not buy this. On the contrary, I think you should find every way you can to teach this message to your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good learning tool for tough subject, February 21, 2006
This book is a great way to start teaching your kids about appropriate and inappropriate touching. This is a tough subject, and I didn't want to scare my little ones about this, and this book does a great job of showing children how to be assertive and say "NO" when someone wants to touch the child or wants the child to touch them.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for the youngest of children, September 30, 2008
My little one was getting to the age when I needed to start teaching the "stranger danger" etc (just over three years old), and when I saw good reviews on this book I decided to add it to my purchase. When it first arrived I was disappointed at the simplicity of the structure of the book, but once I read it I was EXTEREMLY HAPPY that I had bought it.
This book has the perfect wording for introducing your child to self awareness and protection. No scary terms, just simple instructions on the basic concept of "MY BODY IS MINE."
I purchased another book and also a video at the same time, but I have set those aside for perhaps another few months, when I feel that the bigger "stranger" concepts are more understandable.
I give a HUGE thumbs up to this book for any parent, because even if you aren't ready to deal with the tough issues of abuse, this is the perfect way to help your child prevent someone from taking advantage of them.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Birds + Bees + Kids Pick!, August 14, 2008
This simple book is all about empowering our young kids to say no to uncomfortable touch. The simple illustrations and language help kids understand it is okay to say "No!" to anyone when they don't like what's happening.

It includes examples of times kids like to be touched, like giving a hug or holding a baby's hand. And some times when they might not like to be touched, such as someone holding them too tightly.

They then provide a script for kids to practice saying if someone touches them in a way they don't like or asks them to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Teaching our kids their bodies are their own and they have the right to decide when they will share their bodies is a message that will serve them in the long term and that's what this little book is all about!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent empowerment for any child, April 27, 2002
When I worked with abused kids, I came across a wonderful paperback book called "It's My Body" in which a little kid talks about how he/she (drawing is quite gender-neutral) likes giving and receiving some touches, like when Daddy holds his hand or when he climbs into Mommy's lap. He doesn't like giving or receiving some touches, like when GreatAunt Sally hugs him too tight or when someone he doesn't know very well wants him to give them a kiss. If he receives or is asked to give a touch he doesn't like, he says, "Don't do that. I don't like it!" or "I won't do that. I don't like it!" (I believe it mentioned some necessary touches like seeing the doctor...)

We took the book in to my son's pre-K and read it to the class, and all the kids got to chime in and say in a big loud voice, "Don't do that. I don't like it!" They loved it. It is a very non-threatening book, but it allows the child to practice noncompliance in a big loud voice with lots of approval from trusted adults.

Most child molesters select their victims based on the victim's compliance. A young child is naturally reluctant to refuse the demands of an adult. If you train the child from babyhood that he is not only allowed but encouraged to state his noncompliance with some demands on his body, you have given the child a tool to protect himself. A loud refusal attracts attention, which is the LAST thing a pedophile wants, and it may well scare off a predator.

Is it sometimes embarrassing for the parent? Yes! When GreatAunt Sally tries to hug your 3-year-old child and he loudly proclaims, "Don't do that. I don't like it!" you do have a little explaining to do.... When you reach out to give your four-year-old a kiss and he says, "Don't do that. I don't want kisses anymore," it is *very* hard to catch yourself and calmly say, "OK, it's your body and you have the right to decide that." (It was certainly hard for me!)

This is a wonderful book to help any parent make his child less vulnerable to abuse, either physical or sexual. It is very easy to read with your child, very non-threatening, and can be quite fun. I highly recommend it. (original review published April 2002) ... Read more

I only wish Dr. Latkany had written this book 10 years ago when I first began noticing symptoms of dry eye related to a thyroid condition and excessive computer use. With his commonsense approach to healing, Dr. Latkany explains how lifestyle changes and medical treatments can work together to combat this modern day plague. Following the excellent suggestions in this book for only a few days, I've already noticed significant improvement.

I am so glad I ordered this book. I was having a lot of pain and discomfort and had been to three different eye doctors with no success. After reading The Dry Eye Remedy I felt hopeful that my condition could be treated and managed successfully. Because of the suggestion to stay with the restasis treatment for several weeks, I am virtually symptom free and feel as if I have my life back.

Board-certified ophthalmologist and founder/director of the Dry Eye Clinic Robert Latkany presents The Dry Eye Remedy: The Complete Guide to Restoring the Health and Beauty of Your Eyes, a guide written especially to help the 77 million Americans (and millions of others worldwide) who suffer from "dry eye", also known as dysfunctional tear syndrome. Often beginning as a minor irritation, dry eye causes lines, wrinkles, bags, and redness, and traditional remedies such as eyelid surgery or eyedrops can potentially make the problem worse. Offering recommendations to improve eye health and appearance without resorting to surgery, The Dry Eye Remedy includes advice for improving one's home environment, proper nutrition, how to set up a "home eye spa", which over-the-counter remedies are harmful, the pros and cons of medical treatments such as hormone therapy or punctal plugs, and a guide to deciding upon the dry eye therapy that works best for the reader. A list of resources and an index round out this solid guide, accessible to readers of all backgrounds, and highly recommended for anyone who cherishes their eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best primer available for dry eye, September 10, 2007
I was thrilled when this book came out and I've been recommending it to all the dry eye patients I come across. It's thorough and practical, and fills in essential information gaps about dry eye that far too many people are never told by their optometrist or ophthalmologist, like about meibomian gland dysfunction (oil gland deficiency) and nocturnal lagophthalmos (poor lid closure at night) and how to deal with them effectively. This book has been extremely helpful to many of my customers and people in our dry eye support groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for dry eye patients, December 25, 2008
    Pros:
-It offers comprehensive and up-to-date info (as of the date of its publication) about the latest in dry eyes.
-It offers all-around practical advice to dry eye patients who may have otherwise lost hope.
-The depth in which the topics are covered seems just right for most patients.

    Minor cons:
-Artificial tears (such as most Genteal brands) that contain special non-irritating or disappearing preservatives were not emphasized strongly enough. IMO, such drops are better than those that are entirely without preservatives, because preservatives after all do serve a useful and obvious function. Drops without preservatives often come in single-use vials and are therefore harder to deal with if you want to reuse them for cost effectiveness.
-Alleged homeopathic remedies are presented in a largely neutral or optimistic view, but the scientific fact is that homeopathic drugs are bogus and don't really have any medical effect beyond that of placebo. As such, the book was somewhat complacent towards homeopathy, and I feel that this takes away from proper scientifically or empirically sound remedies.
-There are a few minor typos that seem like they could have easily been caught prior to publication with a bit of extra effort.
    -There is no hardcover version.

    Notes:
-After the publication of the book, the prescription drug Lovaza became popular as an omega-3 supplement. For persons with health insurance, it may be cost effective if they can get the prescription drug instead of paying out-of-pocket for supplements.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone experiencing the condition, although if you do read it, it's always better to let this not be the only book you read about the topic. There are other good recent books on the topic that you also may want to read afterwards, both to reinforce the important points and to learn other info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Help for tearing, February 16, 2008
My eyes have been watering for months. I tried over the counter remedies as well as a Restasis prescription from my doctor. The Restasis worked for a while but never really completely got rid of the problem.

I tried TheraTears mentioned in the book and although it said it would take 4-8 weeks to be effective, I noticed a lot of relief in just three weeks. It's a natural way to go, and I much prefer that to drugs.

I finally think I've found what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars for those interested in being informed on eye care, February 8, 2008
This was an excellent book for those who want to be very well informed on causes and manangement of dry eye and its associated problems. The resources in the back are also very helpful, especially the Dry Eye Zone, at which Dr. Latkany answers forum members' questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Explains Dry Eye, June 3, 2009
The book has very good examples of the various types and causes of dry eye, and good suggestions as to home treatments. I found this book very helpful and am better able to understand my doctor's concern.

This is the book I'd been waiting for - for years. It takes a systematic approach to figuring out how and why one's eyes are "dry" (a catchall phrase that lumps a number of conditions together). From there it provides a number of good suggestions for moving beyond being one who suffers dry eyes to becoming one who survives, heals, and takes control of the condition.

I found this book thru the dry eye zone website where one can also find much help and support.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Market for this Subject!, January 4, 2000
I was looking for a book for my 8-year-old that was to the point, descriptive (but in good taste), and informative about where babies come from. Not only did this book fit the bill, but it is also written with a God-based text which I really appreciated.

There is a storyline with a 7-year-old asking questions of her mother and father and it covers topics such as: physical differences between men and women with anatomical names, how married people show their love for each other, how fertilization occurs, how women and men help in raising children. It also briefly touches on adoption, breastfeeding, and other related topics.

An excellent choice for opening up the lines of communication on this sensitive subject with your children!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent educational book . Must for all parents, June 19, 2001
Using this book in our family provided the development of an excellent foundation to develop trust with our children. Children are aware of the special nature of parents reading stories to kids. Many parents and guardians find this a difficult subject to talk freely about. Using the story telling approach neutralises any apprehensions parents or children may have. Ruth has used questioning from the children to their parents on different things and this encourages children to ask questions. The environment of story reading and the ease at which questions arise and are answered by parents is brilliant. God's involvement in the process lets children know how special they are.

    Congratulations Ruth

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was EXCELLENT!, January 12, 2007
My daughter loved this book and she wasn't embarassed by it at all. I felt it was time to start explaining things to my 8 1/2 year old daughter. With all the talk of "sex" on television, I knew she was getting curious as to what "having sex" meant. This book dealt with the issuse in a very kid friendly narrative. It's not factual, but a great story with words, pronunciation, and careful explainations. There's no good way of getting around explaining the "sex act", but this book handles he subject in a delicate, but clear way.

The OTHER book that I bought, "Before I Was Born", by Carolyn Nystrom, in my opinion was WAAAAAY too descriptive for 5 to 8 year old. It, in so many words, decribes an orgasm! "Body parts fitting inside others, semen flowing inside of her and bodies feeling good all over." It sounds graphic and I paraphrased!!! That is just unnecessary for a parent who desires to teach the basics of sexuality to a young child. This is more for an older pre-teen.

I would definitely recommend "Where Do Babies Come From?"

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, October 31, 2005
This book is simple and to the point! My kids loved it, especially my 6 year old son. It was just enough for him to know at this time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not For Kids Who Were Adopted, October 31, 2003
I do not like this book overall. While it does have age appropriate discussion of sex and pregnancy with a Christian focus, the text is too long in my opinion for a child of the target age to sit and listen. My primary objection is that this book is not appropriate at all for adopted children. The stories are told entirely from the point of view of a birth child. The comments and discussions focus on the idea of children being born into the family, nursing to be fed, and so on. There is a very tiny discussion about all families being "different" and a particular child not looking like his birth parents b/c he was adopted; this plus the strong focus of the text on birth families would alienate a child who was adopted rather than inform him/her. If you are looking for a facts of life book and your child was adopted, do not get this book.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, September 1, 2007
I thought this book was very well written and really takes the axiety and akwardness out of your discussion. Great book to squeeze into a regular scheduled reading time. The book does contain a page that has a man and a woman body from the neck down in the nude. This illustration is a very generic one. I think that should be issued in the books description so that parents are aware of this. Otherwise, I really thought the book was great. I read a review that said it did not give this look from an adopted childs point of view. The book itself was about a girl who was not adopted. There is one point in the book that does mention adopted children. Highly recommended.

    Editorial Review

A revised and updated version of the definitive peanut allergy book.

Since the publication of The Peanut Allergy Answer Book in May 2001, there has been much additional research published in the field of peanut allergy and anaphylaxis in medical literature. This research includes new diagnostic tests, new vaccines and therapies, and new information on the history of peanut allergy. In addition, there has also been a great increase in public awareness of the societal impact of peanut allergy, such as in schools and other child-care facilities, in restaurants, and in the food and restaurant industry. This attention has led to the publication of guidelines for schools in the management of food allergies and anaphylaxis, to legislation such as the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2006, and proposed legislation for restaurant guidelines for food-allergic consumers. The incidence of peanut allergy has doubled in the past five years and continues to increase so the impact of this medical problem, particularly in young children, is enormous.

The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 2nd Edition,. contains 50% of new and revised material, including a new foreword and introduction, as well as new chapters such as, "Why has peanut allergy increased so much in the past 5-10 years?"; "What is the difference between being peanut-sensitive and peanut-allergic?"; "What is the Hygiene Hypothesis?"; and "Can skin contact cause an anaphylactic reaction?"

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY! A comprehensive, easy to read book on PA!, June 3, 2001
This book is for those affected in some way or another by the peanut allergy, as well as for those who just want to "know what all the fuss is about". A definite must-read! If you, your child, or someone close to you has just been diagnosed with a peanut allergy and you want to know more, but don't know where to start...here's your answer. If your wondering why your child is no longer allowed to take peanut butter treats to school...this book will open your eyes to the world "the other mother" lives in.

The book is an easy read. The format is very reader-friendly and the vast array of information is presented in easily understood ways. With this book you can not only learn how and why a food allergy happens, but also how to prevent and treat possible reactions. You'll learn what it is in the peanut that is responsible for causing peanut allergies. You'll even learn some interesting facts on the peanut's product history, both as a delicious and useful (in many ways) product, and it's history in medicene, as a potentially deadly poison to those who are allergic to it.

I think the best thing about this book is that it covers more areas than the ones listed above. While those are all very important to cover, you can generally find that kind of information elsewhere. What you generally can't find are books discussing the emotional and pyschological aspects of a peanut allergy. Things like what to do if your child is being threatened with a peanut-butter and jelly sandwhich at school. And what about eating out and flying? How do you handle those with a peanut allergy? What are the latest developments in the research field? Is there any hope for a cure? All of THESE questions are answered as well.

This is an absolutely wonderful book, and I want to personally thank the author, Dr. Michael Young, for his efforts in getting this kind of information out. Not only to those of us in the peanut allergic community, but to the general public, as well. The need for a book such as this has been great for a long time. I, for one, am grateful that it's been filled!

It is my hope that this book will not only help many, many others who are dealing with the peanut allergy, but will also help to educate the general public and let them take a peek into our world. In doing so, maybe some of the preconceived notions that we, as mothers of severely peanut allergic children (mine is a delightful 2yo little boy), are "overprotective, hysterical, and paranoid", can be changed, taking at least a little of the stress involved with managing a peanut allergy off our shoulders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, January 9, 2003
There is a lot of helpful information in this book, especially about foods that contain peanut products when you would not expect it and about the treatment of allergic reactions. I am about 40, and have been severely allergic to peanuts my whole life. I had to learn much of this information through some very unpleasant allergic reactions. If you have a child with a peanut allergy or have the allergy yourself, I would highly recommend this book as a way of avoiding some of those unpleasant (and sometimes life-threatening) experiences, and as a way of understanding how the allergy works.

4-0 out of 5 stars PeanutAllergy.Com gives this book a "must read" rating!, January 13, 2002
    .

This book is a must read for anyone dealing with peanut allergy.

The book is full of useful information on many topics and issues including "staying safe" and the seriousness of this potentially life threatening food allergy.

There is lots of medical information including diagnosis through skin and blood testing, possible symptoms and reactions, treatments (including information on life saving epinephrine medication), and even encouraging research on the road towards a cure.

Dr. Young also writes about many of the issues those with peanut allergy face such as finding hidden dangers, labeling, emotional and social issues, laws, medical awareness bracelets, schools, airlines, restaurants, breast feeding and pregnancy, and much more.

There is even a glossary of terms near the back of the book.

Your investment in this educational tool will be money well spent and you may even find your able to educate those in your life who are not taking the allergy seriously enough.

    Stay Safe,

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Heaven sent for parent's of an allergic child, May 2, 2001
This is a great book for parents of an allergic child to read. The reason that I say this is because it is easy reading and is FULL of great information. It seem to answer all the question you thought of or forgot to ask... it is also great to have grandparents or caregivers read this book so it is easier for them to understand peanut and food allergy in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, June 7, 2002
I highly reccomend this book to any parent who has a child with peanut allergies. It is an extremely informative book. Dr. Young does not use medical terms that are hard for the layperson to understand. He also provides other resources which are invaluable. I liked the way he gave situations and how they were either resolved or should have been resolved. He anwered all you could/would ever want to know about peanut allergies.
Dr. Young has been treating my son for his peanut allergies (as well as other allergies) for the past few years, so i personally know how well informed this Dr. is.
    Thank you, Dr. Young!

Very helpful and consise. Gives a thorough overview of peanut allergy and is easy to understand. Helpful for both myself (I have a peanut allergic son) and for my family to better understand the issues involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars very informative and well written, January 30, 2002
As a parent of a newly diagnosed peanut allergic 4 yr-old, this is just what I needed to read. Dr. Young covers clearly and comprehensively all the aspects of peanut (and other food) allergy. There is so much information currently available on the subject of peanut allergy but this is the only up-to-date book that brings it all together. I recommend this to anyone concerned by - or interested in learning more about - food allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough and easy to read. Informative, June 24, 2008
This is the most thorough book I've read on peanut allergies. You probably won't find this information on the internet, because most of the answers are substantiated with trials performed by experts.

The book is set up in a question and answer form. All the questions are listed in the contents with pages showing where to find the answers. It is also easy to read, so you won't be stumbling over annoying medical jargon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, January 12, 2007
I thought this book was very helpful as I have 2 children with peanut allergies. It answered many questions that I have in very easy to read language. It is a must read for anyone with concerns about peanut allergies.

    Editorial Review

Originally published in 1995, the first edition of Managing Your Mindestablished a unique place in the self-help book market.A blend of tried-and-true psychological counseling and no-nonsense management advice grounded in the principles of CBTand other psychological treatments, the book straddled two types of self-help literature, arguing that in one's personal and professional life, the way to success is the same.By adopting the practical strategies that mental health experts Butler and Hope have developed over years of clinical research and practice, one can develop the "mental fitness" necessary to resolve one's personal and interpersonal challenges at home and work and to live a productive, satisfying life.

The first edition addressed how to develop key skills to mental fitness (e.g., managing one's time better, facing and solving problems better, keeping things in perspective, learning to relax, etc.), how to improve one's relationships, how to beat anxiety and depression, and how to establish a good mind-body balance. For this new edition, Butler and Hope have updated all preexisting material and have added five new chapters-on sexuality and intimate relationships; anger in relationships; recent traumatic events and their aftermath; loss and bereavement; and dealing with the past.

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book, May 24, 2004
i remember being a pre-teen, leafing through many books written for young women that followed an "our bodies ourselves" format. these books were ok, but never what i was really looking for. i didn't want information on how to ask boys to dance or how to apply lipstick- i wondered where the chapters entitled "when you don't feel like the rest or the girls" or "but what if i don't like boys?" were.

what a great help it would have been to have this book! the format is "hip" but not patronizing. while this book affirms the importance of pride and self-respect in queer or questioning young people, it also devotes pages to the concerns and dangers many queer teens face (safe sex, how to begin dating, facing intolerance). transgender issues and stories have their own chapter, as do homophobia and coming out. descriptive paragraphs are broken up by small autobiographical blurbs by young people describing their experiences with the topic at hand, and by smaller essays.

this book is a great place to begin for youth who are GLBTQ, questioning, or who would like to better understand their queer peers and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Teens? Get this!, December 5, 2004
This book is a must-have for any Library shelf that serves teens. It is written in a style appealing to teens and includes short, one or two page summaries of ways to cope with the many issues teens face when questioning their sexuality. It also provides excellent, current resources for teens, from crisis lines to 'safe' (moderated) chat sites. I especially enjoyed the section dealing with 'coming out' to parents and family. It provided experiences from other teens who have (the good, the bad, and the ugly), and also possible responses parents might have when a teen tells them he/she is gay. In addition, it listed possible, respectful ways to respond to less-than-accepting parents. A fantastic compilation of stories, insights, and resources for teens.
